2019 Roseburg High School Girls Soccer Preview

4:26 PM · Aug 28, 2019

The 2019 Roseburg High School girls soccer team is ready to tackle a new season, as they kick off the year Thursday morning against Crater at 10 a.m. at Finlay Field. Roseburg head coach Kristin Parks is entering her second season, after leading the Indians to a 3-10-1 record last year. The Indians scored 20 goals a season ago, after only scoring one goal the year before that. The Tribe will have to replace nine seniors who graduated earlier this year. The Indians lost Emily Wheeler who was the goalkeeper of the year in the Southwest Conference and Callie Price who was 1st team all-league. “We were pretty solid, our back line was strong. Two defenders were seniors,” Parks said. “We only have one returning defender, because Katie Knudson moved to goalkeeper. We didn’t have a lot of success on offense last year during SWC so we’re looking to be more offensive this year.” Knudson was an honorable mention last year on defense. Knudson, Kaitlyn Riley and McKenna Melvin will be the team captains. The Indians still have nine returners from last season, five of which started. Varsity will have 16 players including five seniors, six juniors, four sophomores and one freshman. The JV team will have 18 players and will be coached by Miechelle Fulton. She previously coached Umpqua United youth teams. “Our JV girls are fairly inexperienced, so Miechelle has been a great fit. She’s (Fulton) really positive and encouraging and great at teaching the girls.” Parks said. “The mood is positive this year and were having a lot of fun, it’s an entirely different experience this year,” Parks said. “When you graduate half your team, you have a lot of new people coming in. We’re faster than last year, but unsure about our ball skills going up against competition. We lost some size but gained speed.” “We’re hoping to compete better in the SWC. This is a tough conference,” Parks said. “The Eugene schools have 70 girls trying out for their teams. We’re hoping to be more offensive in league the girls want to fight and are motivated to keep pushing even if we get down.” Since the new turf was installed last summer on Finlay field, the girls have gotten to practice on it all summer to get adjusted after playing just two games on it last season. All seven home games will be on Finlay field and the Indians will have new jerseys to sport this season.
