Chuck, of Chuck's Texaco in Roseburg Has Passed Away
For the past 59 years, you could find Chuck McCullum at Chuck’s Texaco in Roseburg on the corner of Mosher and SE Stephens. Early Thursday morning, Chuck passed away. He was 75 years old, and in May, would have been 76. Born in 1944, Chuck was the owner and proprietor of the full service gas station since 1961. He took over the station when he was around 17 years old from a man named “Skinny” who wanted to retire. Since Chuck was only a teenager, he needed the help from some local businessmen to co-sign for him so he could continue to work with Texaco. Chuck also needed to enlist the help of a local church to get a life-insurance policy for himself to secure the deal with the former owner. I (Ryan) knew Chuck from my time working in the area about 15 years ago. He was a kind man, loved to talk and was one of the hardest workers I’d ever seen. The thing that always struck me though was his consistency. Most of us will never meet another person that has worked at the same job for 59 years. That takes a special person. Chuck typically arrived at the station at 4:30 in the morning and work till about 6 at night. Yesterday however, he called Mike Roberts and asked if he could come in a bit early. Chuck and Mike had known each other for the past 14 years or so, and had worked together for the past 10. After their usual talk, Chuck asked Mike if he could do him a favor and work on a vehicle that needed some repairs. Chuck wanted to leave a little early so he could go home and surprise his wife. Early this morning, Chuck passed away. It was sudden and unexpected. We lost a good man in Roseburg today. Thank you for serving our community Chuck. You will be missed.
