Roseburg School District Releasing Students Early Friday Due to Extreme Heat

6:15 PM · Sep 8, 2022

Dear Roseburg families, The local weather forecast for this Friday continues to call for extreme heat conditions. In order to protect the health and safety of our students and staff, and comply with new heat-related OSHA rules, we will have early release at all of our schools tomorrow, Friday, September 9. Students will be released Friday according to the schedule below, and school buses will be operating on this modified schedule. Release times will be two hours earlier than normal school days (one hour earlier than early release on Wednesdays). Breakfast and lunches will be served at school. This modified day will be similar to a snow day, and remote learning will not be required for the afternoon. Release times: Roseburg High School: 12:45 p.m. Fremont and Jo Lane: 12:20 p.m. All elementary schools: 1:30 p.m. We have made this decision due to our district’s lack of central air conditioning and air exchange in our schools, which impacts our ability to comply with new heat-related Oregon Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA) rules that went into effect this summer. OSAA-sponsored activities planned for later in the day, when temperatures begin to fall, will likely be able to proceed as normal. These activities follow OSAA guidelines for heat index and air quality. To learn more about the new OSHA rules, visit https://osha.oregon.gov/Pages/topics/heat-stress.aspx. You can learn more about the OSHA heat app we use for monitoring at https://osha.oregon.gov/media/videos-online/Pages/heat-safety-app-tutorial.aspx. Our district’s Heat Illness Prevention Plan can be viewed at https://www.roseburg.k12.or.us/departments/human-resources. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please contact your child’s school if you have questions. Sincerely, Jared Cordon Roseburg Public Schools Superintendent Via Roseburg School District
