Roseburg's Chris Thompson Inducted Into Oregon Swimming Hall of Fame Today
Former Roseburg resident Chris Thompson was inducted into the inaugural class of the Oregon Swimming Hall of Fame today at the LaSells Stewart Center in Corvallis. Thompson won the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle. He was the second American swimmer to break the 15-minute mark in the 1,500-meter freestyle, and held the American record for four years. Thompson grew up in Roseburg and swam for the Roseburg High School swim team before swimming for the University of Michigan swimming a diving team from 1997 to 2001. He now resides in Michigan. Another Roseburg resident received a swimming award at the ceremony today. Irelyn Weaver received a Top 5 Oregon Swimming Award for the 10 and under division.
